{"id":397,"date":"2011-12-04T10:32:32","date_gmt":"2011-12-04T10:32:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/themasegroup.org\/?page_id=397"},"modified":"2020-04-01T11:17:49","modified_gmt":"2020-04-01T11:17:49","slug":"daphnes-tribute-to-her-brother-a-sensory-garden-sensory-room","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/themasegroup.org\/?page_id=397","title":{"rendered":"DAPHNE&#8217;S TRIBUTE TO HER BROTHER  &#8211; A SENSORY GARDEN &#038; SENSORY ROOM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This <strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Sensory Garden<\/span><\/strong> was the inspiration of <strong>Daphne Sharp<\/strong> whose brother Robbie had used the NHS Foundation Trust&#8217;s services at St Georges Hospital, Stafford.\u00a0 After an incident on the ward which involved her brother, Daphne asked the staff why the patients couldn&#8217;t go out into the garden for fresh air.\u00a0 She was told it wasn&#8217;t a safe environment to take the patients into.\u00a0 She then requested a meeting\u00a0 with\u00a0 Mike Cooke, The Chief Executive of the Trust, and sought his permission for her to transform the land outside the ward into a Sensory Garden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At this time Daphne knew very little about dementia. Caring for her  brother and then visiting him in hospital, led to her undergoing Mental Health Training\u00a0and gradually learnt more and more about Alzheimer\u2019s. Daphne also served as a Governor Member with the Trust for a good many years.Her fundraising skills\u00a0enabled a beautiful garden to be built with   water features, gazebos and seating areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Daphne then became project leader and fund raiser to create the<strong> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Sensory Garden, <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">which was located between Baswich and Bromley Wards.<\/span><strong> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This garden served a dual purpose, as not only did it benefit the patients on  the ward, it also gave the nursing staff somewhere different to take the  patients; they then also got to spend time in the fresh air and  sunshine.\u00a0 Even in the winter months patients were wrapped up warmly and  taken for a stroll around the garden which was again of great benefit to  them.\u00a0 [Please click on heading to see photographs of the before and after Garden.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/themasegroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Baswich-Ward-Garden-.pdf\">Baswich Ward Garden Before and After Renovation\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 Click to view<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The project\u00a0 moved on a little further and Daphne, using her fundraising skills, and again with the input from nursing staff on Baswich Ward, designed a\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Sensory Room<\/strong> <\/span>on Baswich Ward which would\u00a0 benefit dementia patients, particularly when they became agitated. Imagine being in a room with coloured lights dancing across the walls, the sounds of the sea in the background, and a fresh smell of lavender in the air &#8211; this is what the patients get when the enter the Sensory Room.
